Math Advising Guide: Statistics Path

MATH 0940-Pre-Algebra
Students taking 0940 should feel confident doing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with counting numbers, and have some familiarity with positive and negative numbers. Students in 0940 will learn to calculate with signed numbers, including fractions, decimals and integers. They will also learn to manipulate algebra expressions (including polynomials and those containing negative exponents) and solve basic equations. Students will learn to solve word problems using equations and be introduced to graphing.
MATH 1170-Pre-Statistics

Students taking 1170 should feel confident using the pre-algebra topics, including an ability to compute with decimals, factions, signed numbers, and percents, simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions, and solve basic linear equations.

Students in 1170 will learn to display and analyze date, including an exploration of experimental design, probability, and sample statistics. Algebra topics like proportional reasoning, formulas, and linear equations and inequalities are learned throughout in the context of statistics.

MATH 2170-Applied Statistics

Students taking 2170 should feel confident using operations with fractions, decimals, signed numbers, proportions, ratios and rates of change, and percents, evaluating formulas, and finding equations and graphs of lines and linear models.

Students in 2170 will learn to prepare and conduct a statistical study, which includes analyzing the data and drawing conclusions. They will also learn to use probability theory and distributions, and to conduct estimation and hypothesis testing about population parameters (proportion, mean, variance, standard deviation), including point and confidence interval estimations, and sample size determination. Additionally, they will learn to analyze paired sample data and use statistical methods for analyzing categorical data.
