Central Community College (CCC) has a long history of serving students and communities across central Nebraska. Here’s how CCC began and grew into the college you know today.
How CCC Was Formed
In 1971, the State of Nebraska passed legislation that created six community college areas across the state. Every county was required to join one of these areas.
You are part of the Central Community College area, which serves 25 counties.
How CCC Is Funded
CCC receives funding from several sources, including:
- Property taxes within the 25-county service area
- State funding
- Tuition and fees
- Grants and other funding sources
This shared support helps keep education accessible and affordable.
College Leadership
CCC is governed by an 11-member Board of Governors.
- Board members are elected by voters in the 25-county service area.
- The area is divided into five districts, each represented by two members.
- One board member serves in an at-large role.
Campus and Center History
CCC has grown over time to serve students across the region.
- Hastings Campus
Opened in 1966 on a former naval ammunition depot.
It was Nebraska’s first multi-county vocational-technical college.
- Columbus Campus
Opened in 1969 as Platte Junior College.
It was Nebraska’s first county-supported community college.
- Central Administration
Moved to Grand Island in 1974.
- Grand Island Campus
Established in 1976.
- Kearney Center
Began in 1958 as a practical nursing program through Kearney Public Schools.
It later became part of CCC.
- Lexington Center
Opened in 1977 to expand services to a four-county area.
- Holdrege Center
Opened in 1995 to better serve the southwest region of CCC’s service area.
