Grab your family, friends or just your excitement and join us to learn how to unlock the mysteries of flying kites of all shapes and sizes. This is a class for anyone who loves kites and wishes they could have a bit more success when it comes time to flying them.
During the Friday night class, you’ll unlock the mysteries behind what it takes to have a great day flying a kite … the key procedures for successful flying; the different kinds of kites; the best place to fly a kite; and how to tie the most used knots, launch your kite and make corrections if you run into problems. You will learn about winds, safety and flying conditions as well as how to assemble and handle your kite.
This class starts on Friday evening and continues with a flying session on Saturday. Two more optional flying sessions will be held in locations outside of Grand Island on Saturdays, April 9 and 23, at 1:30 p.m. These Saturday fly sessions will include demonstrations and guidance provided by local professional kiters. This class is designed for kite fliers of all ages, and families and friends are encouraged to attend. This is a great way to spend quality time doing an energyfilled and fun activity that requires no batteries! Participants who attend the class and two fly sessions will take part in the opening ceremonies for the second annual Grand Island Kite Festival on Aug. 6. The festival is sanctioned by the American Kitefliers Association (AKA).
There are two registration levels. For $45, in addition to everything you’ll learn, you’ll get your very own Delta kite, the best kite for beginners. You will assemble it in class. If you already own a Delta kite and want to know the best way to fly it, the cost is $10. We encourage you to attend with family and friends, but keep in mind that your registration covers the cost of only one kite per group. Weather permitting, there will be a kite flying demonstration before the Friday evening class by the Grand Island Area Kite Fliers.
