American Sign Language 1: Lessons 1-4

Learn the basics of the beautiful language of sign in a simple, interactive format. This introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) includes basic grammar, vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers and other cultural information related to the deaf community. The curriculum is based on accelerated language acquisition techniques and focuses on the most common concepts and words used in everyday communication. The lessons are designed to help a student reach communicative competence quickly.

The instructor, Karen Blank, has been using sign language professionally for many years in a variety of settings. Currently, she is working as a substitute educational interpreter/deaf educator as well as a private practice interpreter. She holds educational, state, and national interpreting certifications and licenses.

Lessons 1-4 will focus on introducitons, family, places and feelings. The class will meet Tuesdays, Sept. 20 through Oct. 11.
