Beginning Online Genealogy

  • Class Type: Personal Enrichment
  • Location: Columbus
  • Start Date: March 08, 2023
  • Time: 10 a.m. - 12 noon

This introductory, three-session class will help you begin your family history research using online resources. It is designed for people new to genealogy or those interested in expanding their research to online sources. Bring what you know about your family (names, birth dates, death dates, etc.) because we will use your ancestors in the website demonstrations. Susan Schoenhofer has enjoyed the hobby of online genealogy for 25 years and is thrilled to help you get started.

The class will meet Wednesdays, March 8-29.

  • Week 1: Comparison of free and paid websites
  • Week 2: Genetic genealogy, how your DNA can help your research
  • Week 3: You have gathered the family information, now what?
  • Week 4: Individualized research session with Susan

Susan enjoyed spending time with her Grandpa Shorty who always had a family story to tell. She found these stories fascinating and they sparked her interest in genealogy. She has been able to trace her family roots back to the 1700s, uncovering connections to Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and the Mayflower, to name a few. Susan is enrolled in the Genealogy Studies Program at Boston University with the goal of becoming a board-certified genealogist. Her 25 years of experience and her enthusiastic passion for helping others trace their family roots speaks of her commitment to the science, history and art of genealogy.
