How to make a metal monument sign

There are many, many types of signs out there, made or fabricated in a multitude of ways, using a wide variety of materials. Even all-metal signs can be built a thousand different ways. But here is one way of producing a clean looking monument sign, made mostly of metal, using simple tools and techniques of construction. The final sign will show virtually no exposed hardware, i.e., screws, rivets, etc., but will be extremely rigid and strong and go together in the shop and during installation efficiently and quickly.

You start out building a structurei out of 2" square steel tubing, with a lightweight 14-gaugei wall, plus some 1" angle to make a box frame for the base. The legs of this frame are quite long (about 10' - 6"), and will go 30" or so in the ground set in concrete, and extend up and through the interior of the hollow sign within 6" of the top. The sign, when finished, will literally slide down over these extended legs.
