Travel, Housing and Meals
Participants will arrange individual transportation to Columbus, Nebraska. For those wishing to travel by air, Omaha Eppley Airfield (OMA) and Lincoln Municipal Airport (LNK) located in Lincoln, NE are two commercial airports near Columbus. Both are approximately one hour and 45 minutes from campus. Plans are to provide a shuttle at specific times from the Omaha airport and back. Some participants may want to rent a car from the airport to campus.
We are offering air-conditioned dormitory suites at Central Community College-Columbus for $35 per night. The fee includes bedding, pillows, towels and other essentials. You will have a private room and will share a private bathroom with one other person. The dorms are located in close proximity to the Resource Center, Student Center and Windmill Dining Center. Residents have easy access to a central lounge area, kitchenette, vending machines, coin-operated laundry, free parking, computer lab and wireless internet. Participants are urged to stay with their colleagues in the Residence Hall. Access to resources and informal group discussions are an important part of the experience. You do have the option of staying at one of the local hotels/motels in Columbus. Reservation information can be found at www.visitcolumbusne.com Click on accommodations. The local hotels/motels are approximately 10-15 miles round trip to campus.
Participants will pay for their own meals. Monday and Thursday noon, when we are off campus visiting historic sites, meals will be available at restaurants listed in the schedule. Tuesday at Broken Arrow Wilderness camp we will have a catered working lunch. On Wednesday noon, we will eat at the Joslyn Museum in Omaha. Monday evening we will eat at Duster's Restaurant in Columbus. Wednesday evening, dinner is on your own in the Old Market area of Omaha. All other meals will be available at the Windmill Dining Center at Central Community College. The Windmill Dining Center is located on the campus and features a daily breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet priced at $6 Breakfast, $8 Lunch, $10 Dinner.
Stipend and Commitment
Each selected participant will receive a $1,200 stipend intended to help defray travel, housing, meals and other living expenses, as well as basic books and other research expenses.
Workshop participants will attend all meetings and engage fully in all project activities. Any participants who wish to bring family members or dependents must make their own arrangements for accommodations. Only selected participants may participate in workshop activities and site visits. NEH requires any participant, who, for any reason, does not complete the full tenure of the project, will be required to refund a pro-rata portion of their stipend. The stipend will be paid at the end of the residential workshop. Stipends are taxable.
