The Music program at Central Community College-Columbus is available to all students--music majors and students with other majors who want to participate in music..

Offered as part of our Academic Transfer program, the Music program provides all of the course work music majors need to complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis in performance, education, theory/composition or music therapy. For those interested in teaching, the program also provides special music courses required for to become an elementary school teacher.

The curriculum includes courses in music theory, applied music (private lessons) and music methods, piano, large and small ensembles, public school music, and ear training and sight reading.

Students with other majors are encouraged to join our program! You don’t have to be a music major to sing in the choir, play in the band, take private lessons or even a theory class or two! All students can participate in and benefit from our music program, regardless of their level of accomplishment or interest. There are plenty of performance opportunities from our large ensembles to our small touring ensembles to our spring musical with the Theatre Department.

Available Ensembles:

Bands

Dr. Jeff Curry

Instrumental Music Instructor

The Campus Community Band is designed to bring the campus and community together in a communal musical effort. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings. Membership primarily is made up of people from throughout the Columbus area, but also includes CCC students. There are two on-campus performances each semester. Previous band experience is required.

The Columbus Brass is a new ensemble performing varied repertoire that ranges from Montiverdi to Mahler to the modern pep band. There are several performances each semester. Audition required.

Choirs

Jeff Kitson

 Vocal Music Instructor

College Chorus is a large mixed choir. Rehearsing twice each week, the Chorus performs a wide variety of repertoire from all styles of music. There are two on-campus performances each semester. The Chorus is open to all students, and no formal audition is required.

Spectrum is a small select ensemble that focuses on music from all stylistic periods not generally suited for the larger choral ensemble. The group rehearses twice each week. Audition required.

Musical Theatre

Musicals are presented in the spring in conjunction with the Theatre Department. Audition required.

Additional Information:

All ensembles perform throughout the year for high schools and community events, and participate in festivals in the Midwest and occasionally national conferences.

Auditions for select ensembles are held in the spring for the following year. Information will be sent to area high schools about dates and times. Additional auditions may be held in the fall for interested students who miss the spring dates.

Scholarship opportunities are available to all participating students, not just music majors.

You can pursue your passion for music in a setting that focuses on students as individuals. Our faculty will work with you personally to prepare you to either complete your bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university, stay active in something you love, or find a new and possibly lifelong avocation.
