Human Services

People in the human services field are employed in a variety of positions which involve helping others adjust socially, psychologically, or physically so they can achieve a fuller and more satisfying life.

The job outlook for this field is excellent. The U.S. Labor Department lists social and human service assistants as one of the nation’s fastest growing career fields, projecting a 49 percent increase in the number of employees - amounting 149,000 new jobs – over a 10-year period ending in 2012.

The Human Services program is offered at the Central Community College campuses in Grand Island and Hastings. Graduates find employment in a variety of positions with psychiatric, treatment facilities, social services agencies, school systems, nursing homes,

community-based services, group homes, rehabilitation centers and senior centers.

A paraeducator diploma option also is available, providing entry-level skills for jobs in agencies that serve individuals with various types of disabilities.

Courses required to work in alcohol and drug counseling are offered at Grand Island and Hastings campuses and may be applied toward the Human Services degree with adviser approval.
