Adult Education
Adult Education

Adult Education (AE) provides basic education skills at no cost to students who are 16 years or older and not enrolled in school.

AE includes one-on-one tutoring by volunteers, classes with one or more volunteers, preparation in learning centers, and in some cases, classes with paid instructors. The program is developed according to the individual needs of each community.

Central Community College provides AE classes and GED testing under the supervision of the Nebraska Department of Education. Adult Education is supported at the local, state and national levels.

The program has these major components:

Adult Basic Education for people with less than an eighth grade education.

English As a Second Language (ESL) for people who want to learn to speak, read and write English.

Living Skills for adults who wish to improve their basic life skills.

Citizenship classes - EL/Civics which is civics instruction for immigrants and U.S. citizens.

The college operates GED testing centers at its campuses in Columbus, Grand Island and Hastings and at its centers in Kearney and Lexington. Special arrangements are made for offering the tests in other communities. There is a fee for taking the GED tests and for receiving the diploma, but the GED classes themselves are free.

GED (General Education Development) instruction is for people who want to earn a Nebraska High School Diploma.

To earn a GED diploma, students must pass the following five tests:

  • Language Arts - Writing: Questions are intended to measure the student's ability to use standard written English clearly and effectively. The test includes writing an essay.
  • Social Studies: The test contains material about U.S. history, economics, geography and political science.
  • Language Arts Reading: The student must demonstrate an understanding of what he or she has read in order to answer the questions.
  • Science: Testing includes the areas of  biology, earth science, chemistry and physics.
  • Mathematics: The test questions cover arithmetic, algebra, geometry, use of a scientific calculator and alternate format responses.
