Central Honors Institute

Dates for 2011: Sunday, July 17 - Friday, July 22

Central Community College hosts the Central Honors Institute (CHI) on its Columbus Campus in Columbus, Neb.

CHI is a one-week residential academic camp for Nebraska students who have completed the sixth or seventh grades and have demonstrated academic accomplishments, leadership and maturity among their peers. Students must complete an application and submit a recommendation from a recent teacher or counselor to be eligible to attend the camp.

CHI campers attend classes during the day, socialize with peers in the evenings and experience life on a community college campus, complete with dorm food and residence halls.

CHI Academic Program

During the week, students choose to follow a particular academic track, either CSI at CHI, Exploring Creativity or FLY CHI, led by CHI faculty. All the faculty members have solid teaching credentials and prior experience working at academic youth camps.

The faculty members stress unique learning approaches and real-life applications of concepts. While the typical CHI camper excels at academics, students find they are challenged by the innovative teaching methods during the week.

Comments from past students include:

  • “The class was really interactive with nice teachers and great field trips.”

  • "The best thing about the week was meeting new friends."

  • “The worst thing about the week was saying goodbye to my roommate.”

  • “I learned how to really look into a book and read between the lines.”
  • “Other than 'it was awesome,' there's nothing more to say!”

CHI Social Program

Picture of Girls at Swimming PoolHaving fun with peers is the other important aspect of the camp. The social program is led by CHI staff and includes group games, swimming, table games, relays and other noncompetitive sports.

Because the camp draws participants from all over Nebraska, students meet kids from other schools and cities and have opportunities to form friendships beyond their regular peer group.
